Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Wear?

We stress comfort for our newcomers. The type of clothing we recommend is anything that is comfortable for movement. Your outfit of choice should allow you to move your arms and legs freely.

In terms of shoes, you'll want to wear comfortable shoes that will securely stay on your foot from heel to toe. You also want your shoes to have a flexible sole that allows for movement. If you are seriously committed to taking continuous lessons in the future, you should consider buying shoes specifically made for ballroom dancing. Ask our staff about the “Very Fine” catalog that features hundreds of different styles of great practice shoes for women and men.

Do I Need to Have a Partner?

Nope! Singles, couples, groups, and friends are all welcome. Our classes are taught in a fun and welcoming atmosphere. Every dancer will get a chance to dance with a different person in the group classes. Even if you come with a partner, we encourage you to dance with various other partners, as it will help you build confidence in social dancing, and will help you feel confident leading and following different partners (which could happen at future weddings or parties).

Salsa

This is a truly great club dance, one that is fun, accessible, sexy, and constantly evolving as new generations come to the Salsa clubs. Salsa is now danced to a huge variety of different music including, current popular music, with contemporary pop, rock, and R&B also added to the mix.

Two-Step

Often called the “Texas two-step” or simply the “two-step,” is a country/western dance usually danced to country music.

Rumba
(American & International)

Rumba is universally recognized as the "dance of love." It is danced to slow, sensual music with a Latin beat and features a hip action known as “Cuban Motion.”

Samba

Samba is the national dance of Brazil. Samba is a fun, upbeat, lively style that progresses counter-clockwise around the floor. It is characterized by its syncopated timing, bounce, and rolling hip action.

Tango
(American & International)

Tango evolved from the sultry Argentine Tango danced by gauchos and prostitutes in the brothels of Buenos Aires. Movement is stealthy, almost cat-like and has an unmistakable staccato feel and major dramatic attitude.

West Coast Swing

West Coast Swing is smooth (no bounce) and danced in a slot. The dance allows room for syncopated footwork and improvisation. Followers have more freedom than any other dance, performing their syncopations at will.

Merengue

Merengue is a fun, fast and easy dance made up of simple steps. This dance encourages creativity. Merengue is characterized by its marching rhythms and Cuban motion.

East Coast
Swing

This dance has its roots with the Lindy Hop style from the 1920’s and 1930’s. East Coast Swing is an energetic, fast dance, done usually with triple steps and rock steps to Big Band and even modern day music.

Paso Doble

Paso Doble is a stirring and dramatic dance based on a Spanish bull fight. The leader in this dance represents the Matador and the lady symbolizes his red cape. Paso Doble features beautiful body shapes and sharp, flamenco-like footwork.

Foxtrot

Foxtrot is the dance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. This elegantly "cool" dance had its beginnings in a New York theatre in 1914. The foxtrot is an all-purpose dance that can be performed to many different styles of music.

Bachata

Bachata is a dance from the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean islands. Both the music and the dance have been influenced by Cuban Bolero, the Merengue (also of Dominican Republic origin), Salsa and Cumbia.

Night Club
Two-Step

Nightclub Two Step is a slow, romantic, floaty dance that features rock steps and long glides across the dance floor. It is done to contemporary and popular ballads.

Bolero

Bolero is a slow, beautiful, expressive dance that is somewhat of a hybrid. It combines the dance patterns of Rumba with the rise and fall action of the Waltz. Bolero is the slowest of all the American Style Rhythm dances.

Jive

Jive is similar to a triple-step East Coast Swing. Jive, however, is much faster, and uses a lot of knee and hip action.

Viennese Waltz

Viennese Waltz is characterized by its speed (twice as fast as Waltz) as well as a rise and fall and sway (less than Waltz). With its elegance and turns, Viennese Waltz has an air of magic about it.

Argentine Tango

This gorgeous and improvisational style of dancing has its origins in the brothels of Buenos Aires in the late 19th century.

Hustle

The Hustle is the partner version of disco dancing. It is a fast moving, energetic dance characterized by its many turns.
